O One God In chapter 12 a teacher of the Law given by
God to the Jewish people asked Jesus, “Of all of the commandments, which is the
most important?” (12:28) In verses
29-31 Jesus responds, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O
Israel! The Lord our God is the one and
only Lord. And you must love the
Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind and all your
strength. The second is equally
important: ‘’Love your neighbor as yourself.’
No other commandment is greater than these.”
Great words and direction – not just revealed
by Jesus during His earthly ministry, but revealed by the Word in the Old
Testament as well: “Listen, O Israel! The
Lord is our God, the Lord alone. And
you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul and all your
strength. And you must commit yourselves
wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today.” (Deuteronomy 6:4-6)
Did you notice the addition made by Jesus as He spoke in the
New Testament? The Good News concerns
"One God"
who wants us to love Him with all that we are and to love others as
well. To do this is more important than anything else we could offer God. And what does God offer in turn for our
obedience through faith in Jesus? To be
adopted as one of His children.
“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of
God. So you have not received a spirit
that makes you fearful slaves. Instead,
you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as His own children. Now we call him, “Daddy, Father.” For His Spirit joins with our spirit to
affirm that we are God’s children. And
since we are His children, we are heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ.” Romans 8:14-17a
What do(es) the god(s) you worship offer?
