Matthew – the Gospel
of Fulfillment – Chapter 4 Temptation
It’s difficult to deny the existence of the devil from an
account involving Jesus Himself. And
the forty day period - Israel had
failed during a 40 day period and the result was they wandered in the
wilderness for 40 years before being permitted to enter the Promised Land. Jesus underwent a similar period of testing,
but He remained obedient and faithful.
He became the perfect Mediator able to represent a holy, perfect God and
able to fully understand the temptations and difficulties we as mankind face.
The writer of Hebrews expressed the confidence and hope we
can have this way:
“Since then we have a great high priest who has passed
through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our
confession. For we do not have a high
priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted
in all things as we are, yet without sin.
Let us therefore draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, that
we may receive mercy and may find grace to help in our time of need.” Hebrews 4:14-16
The Bad News is we can’t.
The Good News is Jesus can.
